You Don’t Need To Sound Good To Heal with Alison David
Your voice is doing more than making words. It’s sending vibration through your body, shaping your breath, and quietly reflecting how safe you feel to be yourself. We sit down with Alison Love David, a professional singer, composer, and coach behind Free Your True Voice, to challenge the myth that sound healing is only for “good singers” or trained musicians. What if the most powerful healing sound is the one you’ve been trying to hide?
We talk about the overlooked side of voice healing: the sigh you swallow, the groan you suppress, the hum you never let out because it might sound weird. Alison explains how frequency works in the body, why resonance can feel like an internal massage, and how mindful listening is just as important as making noise. You’ll hear simple, practical ways to start, including gentle vocal toning and noticing where an “R” sound vibrates, then learning to aim that sensation toward tension or pain.
Then we take it into everyday life: how self-silencing can show up as anxiety, depression, tight relationships, and low self-worth, and why your words matter as much as your breathwork. Alison shares a deceptively small practice that can change your inner world fast: speaking to yourself with a kinder tone, like reparenting, and saying “It’s okay” when you slip into self-criticism.
If something lands, sit with it, hum on your way to whatever comes next, and notice your breath. Subscribe to Mind Meets Machine, share this with someone who needs a gentler inner voice, and leave a review so more people can find these tools.

The Frequency We Carry
SPEAKER_00You know, dear listeners, there is a frequency we forget what we carry. A vibration that lives in our own voice, our own breath, waiting to be heard. Not performed, not perfected, just felt. And tonight we are sitting with someone who has spent three decades remembering what the voice really is. And it's not like what we were taught to believe. I'm your host Abik, and you are listening to Mind Meets Machine. This is the podcast where we slow down enough to notice what actually moves us, what actually changes us. And today we say that what sound itself might be trying to tell us is. And we have a very lovely guest to uh today. So please welcome Alison David. So welcome to the show.
SPEAKER_01Hello, thank you very much.
SPEAKER_00Amazing. Thank you so much, Alison, for joining us today. And in fact, we are meeting again, dear listeners. So it is really a great, great uh uh conversations last time we had, and today I also feel like we'll have a very uh compact discussion. So before we get into the discussion, dear listeners, I'd quickly love to introduce you with Alison. So Alison um she calls herself a music medicine woman, and through her work with Free Your True Voice, she spent over 30 years as a professional singer, composer, and coach showing people that healing does not always need words. Sometimes it needs it just needs permission to resonate. Yeah. So I do not want to take much of a time. Let's get started. Welcome to the show again.
SPEAKER_01Thank you. I'm very honored to be here. My name is Alison Love David. I have love as my middle name.
SPEAKER_00Amazing, amazing. So, dear listeners, you can understand with whom we are talking. It's really gonna have a great, great uh conversation. So stay with us.
The Biggest Sound Healing Myth
SPEAKER_00So, Alison, like most people think using their voice for healing means they need to sound good or trained or musical in some traditional way. So, what is the biggest misconception you run into when people first hear about using sound to facilitate their own healing? So, what do you have to say?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, first of all, I think most people don't realize that they actually have a healing tool that is their voice. So, when people talk about sound healing, they usually think about external tools. So I think that would be the first thing. And then if they were to use their voice, I'm not even sure, most people don't know about that, but if they were, then yeah, I think they're likely to think about their own singing voice, the quality of their singing, whether they can sing or not, even though there isn't much renowned detail about how singing is particularly good for your health, but we know it is like singing choirs, things like that, uplifting, there's the breathing with the vagus nerve, it's all really good for you. Being in groups, singing is great for you. So people will associate singing as if they were gonna do sound healing with their voice, they're probably the first thing they think of is singing. But actually, there's so many other ways that you can hear with your voice. And I do like talking about ugly sounds. We could say ugly sounds, we could say unpleasant sounds, and there are many sounds that could really help a person that would not be something they might want anyone to hear. For example, just groaning and moaning and roaring. I used to call them ugly sounds, but they're not really ugly. It's it's all a classification. Also, even burping, like uh some people, like myself, when they want to release energy, um, it comes out in the form of burps, yawning, but also just moaning and toning, grunting and groaning, not even rhymes. And then, as well as that, there's the power of our words. Our words are so powerful, and they can be very used for healing. And people know a bit about that with like things like affirmations and mantra.
SPEAKER_00Wow. So, like uh, if it's not about quality, uh quality of sound, what is it? I mean, what's it actually about? Like, what are people really listening for when they start this kind of work?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, interesting. You said listening for. And that's a whole nother thing because sound is in just like we breathe in and we breathe out, for you to use your full capacity of your sound healing, you need to tune your listening skills. Yeah, that really, really your body, universe, your your mouth is telling things that you can learn about a lot. Gosh, I've just in doing that, I've um I've lost your question.
SPEAKER_00Okay, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Um I was just asking, like, about if it's not about the quality of sound, then uh what actually it is like.
Vibration, Water, And Vocal Toning
SPEAKER_01Yeah, okay, so it's vibration. We're talking waves here, vibrational waves, frequency waves. And so just like colour has frequency, light is a frequency, sound is a frequency. And the wonderful thing is that it creates vibration. If you take a glass of water and you put it next to a pumping speaker, you'll see patterns in it. And so, one of the things it well, the thing that taught me about the healing power of my voice was noticing I'd stood next to speakers. I was drummer bass nightclubs, and I'd be right in the speaker, and I could feel it massaging my body. I could feel the sound like moving the water in my body, and that's how I came across this healing tool, understanding that you can use your sound vibrations and you can send them with your mind into different parts of your body, and the vibration of the water will create relaxation.
SPEAKER_00Correct.
SPEAKER_01So I use that, I use that a lot. I've created on one on my album with four M's, Mindful Moments, Mantras, and Meditations. That album I have a sound vocal toning body scan, which I've used. And so when sometimes people do like meditations where they scan through their body, well, you can apply sound sound to that. It takes practice, but you can apply sound, and those sound vibrations can loosen the liquid in your body. And if you think what a massage is, that's about moving the liquid muscle. So that was how I came across it. I started to direct my sound. Now I wouldn't be singing, I would be toning. So I might be going, so even we could do it now, or the listeners, you listeners could do it now. You could make an R sound and then just feel in your body where you can feel those vibrations. Well, with time, with energy, and with your just with your mind, you can send those vibrations to different parts of your body. I remember when I it was COVID and I was in pain, and I would just be groaning into the places where my pain was. And while I was groaning, the pain diminished. So I'd love you listeners to try it. I'd love you to try it.
SPEAKER_00Amazing. That's amazing. I mean, that shifts something.
Releasing Tension With Real Sounds
SPEAKER_00I mean, we spend so much energy trying to control like how we sound to others that we forget our voice was you know never meant to be curated.
SPEAKER_01Yes, I mean we know about childbirth. Yeah in childbirth, women are encouraged to sound. It helps to release the child from your body. And this this, you know, I go to these fitness classes and we're doing all these fitness, and the other day it happened, we were doing some exercise and I groaned. And it's actually really natural to groan and to make sounds. But when I did it the other day, people giggled and then they said, She's speaking for us. But actually, we could all be doing it. If we all just sighed more, if we all groaned and sighed, when we feel that, it would feel so liberating. And the fact that we wander round being silent to conform is actually building tension inside us. And so when you can, just if you can, just make sounds, if you can sigh, if you can groan, anything that you've been holding in, I really recommend to let it out. And also to start observing. We talked about listening earlier. Start observing when you do and when when you don't let these sounds out, because you could always save them to later. Go home and start groaning after work or whatever. It's so good for you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, exactly. Exactly. And I I definitely would love to ask you about because it also connected to our daily life, right? So for someone who is listening right now who feels that tightness, that holding back, how does this disconnection from voice or sound actually show up in their everyday life? Like what do they start noticing once they realize it's
How Self-Silencing Shows Up Daily
SPEAKER_00there?
SPEAKER_01That's a good question. I think more than anything, with my free or true voice work, it's just about how we are restraining who we really are to conform, to fit in. So I think what happens, you know, I meet people and I have clients who who've struggled with depression and anxiety and as well as body pains. And I think it's more than anything, it will show up emotionally, it will show up emotionally, it will sharpen your relationships, it will sharpen your body when you are withholding your sound. But more than anything, I mean, I just want to bring in the soothing sounds, the gentle cooing, the kindness. Because also the thing that I've noticed with most people that I like to encourage is kind words and kind tones and kind sound, and just a way of being kind to yourself, you know. One of the other things we haven't mentioned is language. So, you know, people might say, Oh, I'm really bad at this, or oh, I'm terrible at that. Like learning to listen to how you put yourself down, how you diminish yourself with your words, super important too. And so the flip side is to be able to be kind, to be gentle, to treat yourself like a child and be the parent, reparent yourself and use kind words. And so, yeah, mostly it presents in ways that self-hate, self-depreciation happens, and yeah, you know, we can shrink in our bodies, we can shrink in our minds, and yeah, more than anything, I think it's just lack of self-worth, lack of care, self-care. And that shows up in health, in relationships. It just shows up.
SPEAKER_00So, I mean uh lovely. I mean, that's such I'd say tangible entry point. Like, so when someone starts to recognize that pattern, what is the one way they can begin to soften it? Like even just a little without needing a coach or code or some kind
Kind Words, Reparenting, And Next Steps
SPEAKER_00of thing. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So the first thing you would want to notice is what comes out of your mouth, what you say, how many times you beat yourself up, how many times you make yourself wrong. And then so if that was happening and you heard yourself say something bad about yourself, or it can just be a thought, it doesn't actually have to come out of your mouth, then the first thing you might go is, oh no, I'm doing something wrong. But you actually have to be kind. So, like a child who's made a mistake, you don't just tell them off, don't worry, you silly fool, why do you do that? You want to go, oh it's okay, you can get it right next time. And just to be able to be kind, for the first and first thing to do is find some kindness for yourself. Let yourself off the hook for not achieving, for not arriving. Just anywhere you can just go, it's okay. So even those two words, it's okay. Yeah, it's okay. You can use your name, that's also very powerful. You can say, It's okay, person for me, it's okay, Alison. I do it a lot and I'm still doing it loads. It's okay, Alison. You so you you've noticed you've just put yourself down, you've done something that you didn't want to do, and and just soothing. It's okay. I think that would be the first thing I would recommend. If any way you can be kind to yourself, any way you can gently use your words, your tone. Did you see? I didn't go, it's okay. I went, it's okay. There's a tone there. That's the beginning.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So I mean, if I ask you if you have to give one advice to the listeners today who are listening right now, or maybe you'll be listening later, if you have to give them one advice, what will you give?
SPEAKER_01It would be a bit like what I just said, really. If it was the one piece of advice, it was start to build a relationship with yourself of kindness. It's you are beautiful. You are a genuine lovely person. I have a song, it goes, Who can really be to blame when intrinsically we are the same? We were born with open hearts and we're just trying to play the game. We were born with open hearts. We are beautiful. I wrote that song when I was pregnant, I think. With and and just looking at babies. And if you can just find yourself as a baby, your innocent self, and then also be your present self and almost split the two up. There's the baby you and the adult or whatever age you are, you, and then just try and build a relationship with these two people. It's called reparenting, that's what I call it. Just try and find a way to just give that person, that small, innocent version of you, some time, some attention, some kindness. I think that's the best that you could do. If that was the one piece of advice, I think that would be it.
SPEAKER_00And if listeners want to connect with you, how they can connect.

And I just suggest please, please reach out to her. You will love it. So I'll I'll put everything in the show notes for your easy reference. And I'll just say, like, you know, uh, your vo your voice is not a kind of performance, it is a frequence that you are born carrying. And it has never needed your permission to matter, right? So, first of all, thank you so much, Alison, for being here again and sharing your perspectives. Your I I really love having conversations with you. Uh so it's really, really great. Thank you so much for having here. And uh for all the listeners, like I'd say, like, thank you so much for being here. Thank you for uh being here and listening to this conversation. And along with that, I'll say, like, if something actually landed, then just be with it. Just sit with it for a while, maybe uh hum, hum a little on your way to wherever you are going next. Maybe just notice your breath. That's that's enough. So we'll be here next time, and so will you for sure. So until next time, take care of your of that frequency that you carry, and because it's yours, it's needed. So thank you so much.
SPEAKER_01Thank you, thank you.
