Internal Safety For Strong Boundaries with Barb Nangle
When a boundary collapses, it’s rarely because we don’t know the “right words.” The real problem is what happens inside our body the second someone gets upset, we feel guilt, or the relationship feels at risk. If your nervous system reads that moment as danger, you’ll fold even with a perfect script.
We sit down with boundaries coach, speaker, author, and podcast host Barb Nangle to unpack the missing ingredient: internal safety. Barb explains why boundaries are not about controlling other people’s behavior, they’re about taking control of your own life. We dig into how identity (people pleaser, fixer, rescuer, “helpful one”) turns saying no into a violation of who you think you have to be, and why guilt is often mistaken as an instruction to undo your limit.
From there, we name what’s underneath shaky boundaries: trauma, including relational trauma and the drip-drip-drip of emotional invalidation. We talk signs you may be living with poor boundaries (resentment, overwhelm, exhaustion, harsh self-talk), how numbing and dissociation show up, and a subtle but life-changing distinction between isolation and solitude. You’ll also get practical prompts you can use immediately to build emotional regulation and self-trust: asking what you want or need, minding your own business, checking whose feelings you’re carrying, and taking better care of yourself.
If this hits home, subscribe, share this with a friend who overgives, and leave a review so more people can find the conversation. What’s the hardest part of holding a boundary for you: guilt, fear of conflict, or fear of being misunderstood?
